Rita E. (nee Hillsgrove), 92, of Forked River, formerly of Dumont, died Saturday, April 15th at the Emerson Rehabilitation Center.

Rita was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and was the only child of the late Anna and Albert Hillsgrove.  She was a graduate of Queens College and was employed by Macy’s in New York City.

Rita and her parents moved to New Milford, NJ and were parishioners of St. Mary’s Church in Dumont.  This is where she met the love of her life, Vincent R. Conner.  She and Vincent were married on June 7, 1952 and raised their nine children in Dumont.

Rita and Vincent fell in love with the Jersey Shore and bought a second home in Lavallette where they vacationed for many years.  Eventually, when the children were all grown, they sold both the Dumont and Lavallette houses and built their dream home on the bay in Lanoka Harbor.  They spent many happy years there.  Together they enjoyed going out to dinner, attending functions with friends, and traveled to many places both in and out of the country.

Rita and Vincent were married 48 years.  His passing in the year 2000 was the only thing that separated them.  Her most recent years were spent living in Forked River, New Jersey.

Rita was the loving mother of Maryellen Andersen of Pleasant Mount, PA, Eileen Jodeksnis of Groveland, FL, James (deceased), KC Latchford of Chestertown, NY, Patrick of Dumont, Nancy Perez of Forked River, Michael of Dumont, Daniel of New Milford, and Sheila of Wood-Ridge.  She was also the Nana to 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be offered Wednesday, 10 AM, at Sacred Heart Church, Haworth.  Interment with her late husband will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.  Family and friends are welcome to celebrate Rita’s life today, Tuesday, 4-8 PM at the Frech-McKnight Funeral Home, 161 Washington Avenue, Dumont.  In lieu of floral tributes, donations may be made in Rita’s memory to the American Cancer Society/Dumont Relay for Life, Attention:  Relay for Life Dumont, 986 South Springfield Ave., Springfield, NJ 07081.
